A beautiful gold and champlevé enamel belt buckle with California symbology on the face, 2 1/2 by 1 1/2 inches and lovely. Straight from the Gold Rush and believed made by the California Jewelry Company, William Cummings patentee. "Pat applied for" on the reverse of this early buckle, one of the many items turned out by San Francisco jewelers eager to make use of a plentiful local resource - gold. The gold and black enameled belt buckle is decorated with opposing figures of Minerva with staff and a bear at her feet, taken from the state seal of California. Manufactured by the California Jewelry Company around 1868, the buckle has a three prong securing mechanism.
