Nice, Identified and Enscribed Colt Model 1862 Police Pistol, Signed CDV and Holster to Major Samuel McConihe, 93rd New York Volunteers ~ 1862 $10,000.00 plus shipping(U.S. Only) Group includes a signed CDV of the man, his pistol and holster. Pistol bears serial number 5568, though a couple different serial numbers appear on other parts. Matching patina suggests that they have been together since the Civil War. Inscribed on backstrap: "Presented, Troy, Feby 5, 1862 To Cap.t Sam.l McConihe by the R.R. Club, 93rd Reg.t N.Y.S. Vol.s." We believe that the “R.R Club” stands for “Rensselaer Republican Club”. The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, attended by McConihe, still exists in Troy N.Y. today. Capt. McConihe was Born: Sept 8, 1836 in Merrimack, N.H. and Died: Sept 9, 1897 New York, NY. He was a lawyer before the Civil War, became a Regular Army officer fighting Indians in the West after the war, died while still serving in 1897. His brother, Bvt. Brig. Gen. John McConihe (KIA Cold Harbor) is buried next to him in Troy, New York. McConihe, enlisted at age 25 for three yrs, at Troy NY, on November 6, 1861, as the Captain of Co. K, 93rd NYVols. He was promoted after Gettysburg on November 11, 1863 to Major of the regt. He was wounded in action at Wilderness, Va. on May -, 1864. With heavy casualties in 1864, McConihe was given command of the regt, and 1864-dated after action reports for the 93rd found in the Official Records, were written by him until the time of his mustering out in 1865. On December 17, 1864 he was promoted to Colonel of the regt, but not mustered, probably due to the reduced size of the regt from heavy combat, thereby not justifying the presence of the full Colonel for the regt. A hard-fought regt, the regt went into the Battle of the Wilderness with 433 and lost 258 killed and wounded (60%). McConihe was brevetted Lt. Col. and Bvt. Brigadier General Volunteers March 13, 1865 for Conspicuous Gallantry at the Battles of Wilderness and Spotsylvania. Indian War service included: 2nd Lt. in the 14th U.S. Infantry, Feb 23, 1866; 1st Lt. 14th U.S. Infantry, Feb 23, 1866; Captain 14th Inf. Feb. 25, 1876. Bvt Captain U.S.A, March 2, 1867 for gallant and meritorious service at the Battle of the Wilderness. Bvt Major U.S.A. March 2, 1867 for gallant and meritorious service at the Battle of Spottsylvania. Bvt Lt Col. U.S.A. March 2, 1867 for gallant and meritorious service during the War. |
