Rare, Identified World War II Fleece-Lined Flight Jacket to a Ball Turret Gunner, 95th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, Gunner aboard "Lovely Lady," "Rosie Cheeks," "'Ells Belle" ~ 1944 $3,000.00 plus shipping Offering consists of the flying jacket worn by 35-mission veteran during raids over Berlin and Omaha Beach on D-Day. Fleece is a little stiff but overall condition of jacket is very good. Name tag added by the veteran upon his return home and participation in squadron reunions. Squadron Insignia on front is a repaint, in my opinion, though veteran says no. Marvelous 8th Air Force piece worn by a man who saw more than he should have had to and who did more than was asked. Gunner was on restriction for shooting rabbits off base in Southern England when a sergeant walked into the brig the morning of June 6th, 1944, flipped on the light and said: "This is it. You want to go?" This man flew the tail spot for the 800 plane raids over Berlin. Super piece. The 95th BG was the first 8th Air Force bomb group to fly a bombing mission to Berlin, on Mar 4, 1944. Also, the 95th shot down the highest number of enemy aircraft of any 8 AAF group. They also had the first, and perhaps only General killed in action while flying on one of their missions. Lastly, the 95th had the highest # of unit citations (3) of any Bomb Group. |
