Bronze on Marble Bust of Union General George Thomas ~ ca. 1900

$1,250 shipped, (U.S. Only)

I love this bronze. Finely sculpted view of the "Rock of Chickamauga," General George Thomas. Unusual in that I believe this piece was commissioned by one A.C. McClurg, a 20th Corps adjutant to General McCook who admired Thomas and his deeds. McClurg returned from the war and started one of Chicago's foremost bookstores, publishing a number of Civil War histories and biographies and no doubt commissioning a line of bronzes of his favorite Civil War leaders. This one stands eight and a half inches tall. It bears McClurg's copyright on the reverse and the date "1897." Thomas is sculpted with a third star which I don't believe was issued but which may have been added out of admiration! Great display piece.
